The most rambly, pointless post ever.

I had really awful allergies and did five years of allergy shots. They changed my life and were totally worth it. My sweet allergist with the slightly crossed eyes was a bit dumbfounded, though, when I asked when I would get my sense of smell back.

Huh?

I have a sense of smell, but I guess it isn't as strong as other people's? But I think it's just fine?

Anyway. I love the smell of honeysuckle, and of lilac. And pot roast with all the carrots and onions and potatoes with it. But my favorite smell?

My kids.

Now, people talk about the way new babies smell, and moms identify their kids' smells. But I'm talking about my furry kids.

I loved to smell the side of the Geriatric Poodle's face, right between his ear and his eye. That was my baby.

I keep smelling his favorite toy, and his collar. They don't really smell like him. And that makes me kind of sad.

But Foxie Doxie is snoring on my lap right now, and he smells very warm and dog-like. When he hasn't been rolling in decomposed squirrel, he actually smells very sweet as well. He smells like my dog. And that's just comforting.

Foxie Doxie was sniffing at the Geriatric Poodle's kennel. Lil' Fluff was totally the alpha dog, and Foxie Doxie would often sit in his brother's larger kennel, as if trying to make a move for dominance. But now that the Geriatric Poodle is gone, Foxie hasn't stepped into the kennel once.

I know I need to break the kennel down and put it in the basement. Just not right now. Same with all of the Geriatric Poodle's medications ... I should throw most of them away. Just not right now.

Because right now? I'm busy with a sleeping dachshund.

  1. I love my dog's smells even when he stinks. Which is frequently. And he's the best to sleep with:>)

  2. Why throw anything away until you're good and ready? Whenever that may be?

  3. It's all part of the process. I'm with Claire B. Wait until you're ready.

  4. Dear Cha Cha,
Can you donate his medicine and other items to an animal shelter? Maybe this would be more comforting.
You are long overdue for something lovely happening, it's about time for you to experience some of the good karma you put out into the world!

  5. I love that their feet smell like Doritos. Go ahead, test it. They do. I promise. Well, unless you are about to tell me my sense of smell is totally fubar'd from 30 some odd years of having pets.

  6. I totally understand you! Tom sometimes smells a little... well... catty, and though I don't much go for the smell in other cats, I love it on him, because I love him!
You grieve the way you want, the way you need... Keep the kennel and the meds as long as YOU want! Both you and Foxie Doxie need time to get over this...
You're both in my thoughts and my heart right now - you really didn't need this!
Take care, and hug that dog of yours from me and Tom (though I guess Tom would be scared out of his mind by a D.O.G. but well, you get my drift).

  7. I had to our put little 9 lb mutt, Pepper, to sleep about 2 years ago. She was 13 and started biting everyone and completely lost control of bladder and pooh and could barely see and her teeth were so bad she could barely eat. She was not happy and not feeling good. We had rescued a much bigger mutt, Scout (kinda like the Pirates of the Caribbean dog) about a year before we put Pepper down. He outweighed Pepper by about 40 lbs. but she was the queen of the house and Scout was submissive to her. After Pepper was gone, I moved Scout's dishes to her spot because it left more room in a spot we needed it. Scout refused to eat from that spot. It was Pepper's.

A year ago we got another puppy - a husky for my daughter. Mya is so different from Pepper but it has been fun to have a goofy puppy around. Of course, she is now about 40 lbs. too. I miss my lap dog.
