Like any human with a beating heart, I'm so glad to see Betty White get the mad props she so rightly deserves. It's great to see her at the pinnacle of her popularity - and her wicked sense of humor - at 88 years old. I trust you have your DVR set for her Saturday Night Live hosting gig in May. I know I do.
However, with all the love lavished on The Golden Girls, it's easy to forget another seminal girl-power sitcom of the 80s. Of course I'm talking about Designing Women.
I loved this show. Loved it. Watched it every Monday night. And I was truly sad to hear of Dixie Carter's passing.
In her honor, and just because it's so, so good, here's my favorite Dixie Carter moment.
And let's be honest. I have, at times, borrowed Julia Sugarbaker's delivery style. I learned a lot about being a strong woman from her. And one day, I, too, hope to have the occasion to announce, "And that, Marjorie, just so you will know, and your children will someday know, is the night. The lights. Went out. In Georgia!"
Because a girl can dream. Kind of like how I dream about one day being interviewed about lava. And I will look thoughtfully at the camera and say, "Lava? That's some hot shit."
What do you dream of saying?

Favorite designing women ever was when Julia was being counseling by some guy about how she went on diatribes and talked too much. Sometimes you have to make it short and sweet. So it ends with her telling someone off "Eat. Dirt."
ReplyDeleteLOVED THEM DESIGNING WOMEN!!!
Excellent! I have a Dixie Carter tribute post running around in my head that hopefully will one day make it to the blog, but until then... I would love to one day be able to say what Julia Sugarbaker said (or something like this) to the mistress of one of her clients when she'd finally had enough: "I find you rude, lazy, horny and dumb." Short and to the point.
ReplyDeleteI love(d) Designing Women and of course the Golden Girls too. I would LOVE to one day tell my MIL to "Eat dirt and die, Trash!" as Blanche so calmly told Dorothy. :)
ReplyDeleteSince I'm bipolar (just got the 'official' diagnosis) my filters have always been somewhat weak, so...lucky me! I have actually enjoyed saying things like this for pretty much my whole life! here's a couple recent gems:
ReplyDelete~ "...I look forward to continuing my fabulous life without the burden of having you in it."
~ "...I am so sorry to have to inconvenience you by being unavailable in the future."
(Upon being told, ..ma'am, get out of my face...", by a teenaged movie theater manager)
~"..I'm already in your face!! CAN'T YOU SMELL MY BREATH?!!?"
(Upon hearing a patron behind me in line at the customer service line at Best Buy complaining loudly and whining)
~"...I thought I recognized you! That was you honking and honking at that poor man in front of you at the red light! Haha! I mean really, what did you expect him to do? The light was RED? Haha. You must really be having a very bad day." She got pink-cheeked and sheepish and shut her damn mouth. Yeah, I'd been behind her in my car as she layed on her horn, at a red light, behind another car who couldn't go, or turn, hello? red light? And the kicker? Her bumpersticker said, 'wag more, bark less'. pfft.
But I am a big fan of the Sugarbaker-style verbal smackdown. Of course, some are more eloquent than others...
* ; )
I encourage you all to let 'em rip.
My fave? Better to be pissed off than pissed on.
ReplyDeleteI did adore that show. Between those Designing Women and Murphy Brown, I knew how to be a strong woman.
ReplyDeleteSo now I wonder, who does this generation look to?
Some day the situation wil arise that will allow me say "Since I'm the one who put you on your pedastal, let me be the one to help you down."
