Your skin is like velvet.

Yesterday, I came home to find another annoying flier taped to my door. Instead of lawn care, this one was for Avon. From my Neighborhood Avon Lady.

Except, upon further inspection, I discovered that my Neighborhood Avon Lady is named Brad.

It never occurred to me that men could be Avon Ladies. And I bet they don't even call them Avon Ladies anymore. And Mary Kay Ladies? Probably Mary Kay Consultants now. It all makes me feel hopelessly behind the times - and guilty. I am sexist and I didn't even realize it. I am part of the problem!

However, let's be honest - if Brad is the doting sort of Avon Lady, he could pretty much sell anything. A well-timed "Honey, you look di-VINE" could make all the difference.

But that also got me thinking about other jobs where, if you saw a man, you'd sort of freak. Can we beat The Office's recent male lactation consultant? I guess only male wet nurses would be more outrageous. What do you think?

Male Hooter waitresses?

I had a male midwife for a while (not for the birth, but during the many, many monitoring sessions I was prescribed). I found it a little strange at first (more from the point of view of "why would a young guy want to be a midwife?" than anything else) but actually found him very soothing and reassuring in the end. And I was sorry he wasn't there for the birth. But then again, I've always hated female doctors, gyne etc., which I've been told is rare - I just find male ones more understanding of my (many) neuroses...
PS Your word verification - kirlys - is just like a French person trying to say my real first name!

Yes, that is a little, ahem, disconcerting. "Meet Brad, my Avon consultant." Has a certain ring to it, though.

I know a lot of people don't mind it, but I'd never have a male gynocologist. blehh. Never had it, never will.
My male dermatologist has never let me down, on the other hand...and people have been trusting male hairstylists for ages, and I would say here, the gayer the better. *haha!* So maybe a male esthetician isn't such a wildcard here in the 21st-century...? Some of those fellas on RuPaul's Drag Race seem to have a knack for it...
